Breast care 'important at any age'

Date: 10/01/2008 11:43:39

People of all ages have been warned that it is never too soon to think about breast cancer care.

Although the majority (eight out of ten) of breast cancer cases are found in women over 50, the organisation Breast Cancer Care says that younger women, as well as men, should also regularly assess their breasts for abnormalities.

When undertaking breast self-examinations, the charity says that people should be on the look-out for a puckering or dimpling of the skin and nipple changes like a difference in their shape or position as well as unusual lumps in the tissue.

"It is important that women of any age are breast aware throughout their life, by being familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel so that any changes unusual for them can be picked up quickly and reported to their doctor," a spokesperson for the charity said.

According to figures from Cancer Research UK, breast cancer is now the most common cancer in the UK, with more than 44,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer everyday.
