Bird flu claims another in Indonesia

Date: 1/2/2008 9:27:07 AM

Recent developments in Asia have served to undermine claims that global health officials have been 'overestimating' the risk posed by Bird Flu.

Just this week, four more deaths were reported in Indonesia, bringing the total number of fatalities from the virus beyond the 100 mark.

At the same time, officials in India are working to prevent its worst-ever outbreak among poultry from spreading into the nearby city of Calcutta, which has a population of 14 million people, while both Pakistan and Myanmar have also recently reported cases of the H5N1 virus affecting humans.

According to the World Health Organisation, while the threat of a pandemic has not diminished, bird flu 'fatigue' has kicked in, partly as a result of fewer cases involving Western Countries.

"It's not an issue which is always going to remain on the front pages of newspapers," said Gregory Hartl, WHO spokesman in Geneva.

"But that doesn't change the public health assessment of the situation

To date, more than 220 people have died from the disease, the majority of whom had close contact with birds on a daily basis, while some 2.5 million birds have been slaughtered since the start of 2008 alone in an effort to contain the problem.
