Back pain 'ignored by teenagers'

Date: 16/10/2007 09:33:51

Back specialists have claimed that teenagers do not seek medical advice on common issues like back pain when they need it.

Teenagers channel more of their concerns onto money and social life than into taking the necessary health steps to talk to a doctor, according to a survey from the British Chiropractic Association (BCA).

Worryingly, the BCA survey revealed that when experiencing aches like back pain, 47 per cent of teenagers claimed that they would be unlikely to do anything other than wait for it to go away.

Tim Hutchful, of the BCA, said: "Today's teens have become so engrossed in their social lives and with their appearance that the most important thing, their personal health, seems to have slipped off their agenda.

"Many teenagers are ignoring aches and pains which could lead to back and joint problems in later life," he added, stressing the importance of getting relevant medical advice early on.

Among those suffering from back pain, more than 80 per cent claimed that it was a result of sleeping in an uncomfortable position, while heavy were the main cause for 76 per cent.

Many may expect the heavy bags to be laden with school books – but those condemning unworried adolescent socialites will claim that the youngsters are in fact bearing the burden of electronic gadgets, make-up and socialising schedules.
