Anti-ageing creams 'no match for Botox'Date: 20/06/2007 09:26:42

No anti-ageing skin product on the market can rival the effects of Botox, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) has claimed.
According to Baaps, there is little evidence to prove that using one of the multitude of face creams on the market will actually reduce the effects of wrinkles and fine lines.
Although 'botulinum toxin', commonly known as Botox, is more expensive than anti-ageing creams, it provides an "incredibly effective" treatment without the need to go under the plastic surgeon's knife, the organisation said.
Kevin Hancock, honorary secretary of Baaps, explained: "Nothing that you can buy in a cream in the high street is going to have the effect that Botox will.
"In terms of creams, my dermatology colleagues tell me that there are really only two creams that are sold that are any benefit to the skin. One is a sunscreen, and the other is something called a topical retinoid.
"All the other things … are just expensive moisturisers," he added.
An estimated 50,000 Botox injections were carried out in the UK last year.
