Anorexia: common yet temporary condition, study concludesDate: 01/08/2007 08:57:54

Anorexia is more common that generally believed, though is, for the most part, a transient condition, Scandinavian scientists have claimed.
In a national study recently undertaken in Finland, five per cent of the women questioned admitted to suffering from some anorexic symptoms, including mild self-starvation and obsessive anxiety about weight, during their lifetime, with the majority developing them between the ages of 15 and 19.
Also, 2.2 per cent of Finnish young women were found to have suffered from a severe form of anorexia nervosa.
However, the researchers at the University of Helsinki also found that 70 per cent of women with anorexia had recovered from the condition by the age of 30.
With the average duration of anorexia being found to be three years, around 25 per cent recovered within a year, 33 per cent took up to two years to recover and 67 per cent up to five years.
The findings come as the Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks announced that it is to tackle the subject of anorexia through one of its plotlines in an effort to further explore the issues surrounding the condition.
