Abortion laws in focus

Date: 12/10/2007 14:55:07

Medical experts have advised MPs that it is safe for women to carry out their own medical abortions at home, despite the Department of Health stating that it has no plans to change current abortion laws.

Currently women wanting to terminate a foetus up to nine weeks old can only take two tablets, mifepristone and misoprostol, under medical supervision, and these cannot be taken at home.

The government has stated that it has no plans to change the law on current procedures, despite the Royal College of Nursing and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists suggesting that it may be safe for women to conduct their own terminations.

Meanwhile the British Medical Association has also suggested that laws requiring women to have the signatures of two doctors if they want an early abortion could be scrapped.

According to figures published in medical journal the Lancet, one in five pregnancies worldwide and one in three in Europe currently ends in abortion.
